Reflection

In the summer of 1971, Lighthouse began in its infancy at a little Kiwanis Center located in Milford, Delaware. Royce and Glenda were 21 years-old and from the deep southern culture of Louisiana. While the eastern seaboard culture was known for its cold temperatures, the warm, loving hearts of the people solidified Royce and Glenda’s calling for the community of Milford and the surrounding area.

Ronnie Rogers, who later became Milford’s Mayor, and Jack Peterman, who became a state Representative, were some of their first friends and helped them locate the Kiwanis center.

In 1972, land was purchased on Rt.14, Milford-Harrington Hwy, and construction began on a new 350 seat facility. In 1974, the church building was complete and a new era for Lighthouse began. The walls of this building were expanded and remodeled seating 550. In 1987, another building was added to adjoin the present church for a fellowship hall and academy.

Lighthouse grew through prayer and a sincere burden to tell others all that Jesus had for them. Knocking on doors, bus ministry, and seeing lives changed became the expectancy of the church.

Lighthouse reached out into the community through these many ministries: Prison Outreach, Lighthouse Star Academy, Radio ministry 1972-1975, Bus Ministry, Deaf Ministry, Life classes, Nursing Home Ministry, Choir for all ages, Praise Team, Musicians, Orchestra, Drama Team, Sunday School from PreK-Adult, Youth on Missions Trips, Youth Ministries, Spanish Ministries/mother daughter work with Pastor Adrian and Mary Maldonado, and Purpose Institute.

Vision

The Word of God tells us, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Pastor and Mrs. Andrus envisioned a new facility for future church growth, an academy, an academy of arts, and a youth center.

The vision began to unfold in December of 1999. Lighthouse purchased 72 acres of land from Mr. Lawrence Isaacs with the purpose of developing the property to provide enough funds to build a new church.

Fowler and Son’s Construction, owned by Fred and Charlene Fowler, purchased 26 acres for a residential sub-division, named Lighthouse Estates.  In 2004, Hampton Inn purchased 2.3 acres and built a beautiful hotel. During this time, Dennis McIlvain, one of the brethren of the church, had a dream where an eagle dropped a large piece of concrete, and it fell onto our land. Within the next few weeks, the land was purchased by Eagle One Construction Company to build the new Hampton Inn.  At each turn of events it seemed God had gone before us to let us know He was with us and directing our steps.     Lighthouse Estates.  In 2004, Hampton Inn purchased 2.3 acres and built a beautiful hotel. In 2008, with the threat of a failing economy, Pastor Andrus realized he needed to secure a loan instead of waiting for the land to sell as first desired.  The Pastor led the church to a time of prayer and seeking God for an answer.  It was then Lynne Schaffer came into our pathway and was instrumental in securing a loan to build this beautiful edifice for the Glory of God. Lynne and all the bank officers at Dover Federal Credit Union were a joy to work with and we know it was a “God blessed” happening.

In September 2014, Pastor Andrus undertook the great challenge of general contractor to save funds so that Lighthouse could build this new sanctuary.

God gave Pastor Andrus key people to help him to bring this vision to pass; Mayor Ronnie Rogers and Ruth whom we have utmost friendship were such a great help. Representative Jack and Sandy Peterman our great friends did everything to promote the future of Lighthouse. In the Milford city offices, Richard Carmean and many others worked hard to see this dream fulfilled. city offices, Richard Carmean and many others worked hard to see this dream fulfilled.
State officials, Representative Harvey and Mrs. Kenton, Representative Dave and Mrs. Wilson, as well as Senators Gary Simpson, and Senator Bonini were constant friends, along with a host of others too numerous count. Mrs. Kenton, Representative Dave and Mrs. Wilson, as well as Senators Gary Simpson, and Senator Bonini were constant friends, along with a host of others too numerous count.

Many great miracles happened along the way. One included Mike Tyson, the owner of Total Site Development, who stood beside Pastor Andrus.  Mike Tyson served as Construction Manager and donated his services to Lighthouse.

Another miracle came through the service of our attorney, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Rodriguez, some of our dearest of friends who also donated their services to Lighthouse.
The congregation of Lighthouse was faithful throughout the construction of the new facility and God continued to bless with powerful services during the entire building phase.

Many men sacrificially gave of their time and skill to support their Pastor and help complete the needs of the church building. Our ladies lovingly served by providing home cooked meals, cleaning, and painting. Together we fervently prayed for this miracle.

This spirit of unity was pleasing to God and Lighthouse is now reaping the fruit of the completion of a beautiful sanctuary on 45 acres of ground. We celebrate by dedicating all that He has entrusted into our care to be used to His Glory!
